The seminar will be held in English and interpreted into Swedish Sign Language.

Abstract

In this seminar, I will talk about my progress and my activities during the first two years of my dissertation project “Variation in Yucatec Maya Sign Languages”. The aim of this thesis is the documentation of description of indigenous sign languages that emerged in Yucatec Mayan communities with a high incidence of deafness in the peninsula of Yucatán in Mexico. I will provide a general introduction about the languages and the communities of study, present my fieldwork methods and reflect on my experiences during the first two periods of fieldwork in Yucatán. Then I will introduce two studies that are part of my (compilation) thesis, in which I investigate Translanguaging in Yucatec Maya Signing Communities and Numeral Variation in Yucatec Maya Sign Languages. To round off, I will share my ideas for planned studies during the second half of my PhD.
