Abstract
The discussion will focus on the use of statistical and mapping methodologies for exploring linguistic data related both to sociolinguistics and historical linguistics. The statistical approach can suggest measuring systems that explain different realities in a quantitative way, for example with indexes on perceived dialectality of a specific code, vitality of a language or diglossic relations among spoken varieties on the territory.

The use of maps is not only a way the allows the researcher to “see” the linguistic phenomenon, but mainly a heuristic tool that suggests interpretation and analysis of the diatopic linguistic reality.

The computer programme Filemaker — as an example of a relational database, that at the same time stores, analyses and displays dialectological and sociolinguistic data — and QGIS — open source geographic information system — will be presented as tools of a good practice in research in sociolinguistics and linguistic geography.
