Servane Courtaux will be visiting the Department of Linguistics between May 15th and August 5th, to work on a 3-month research project with Robert Östling, researcher at the Section for Computational Linguistics. She is from France and currently in fourth year of higher education, studying IT Engineering at ENSTA ParisTech, based in Paris.

Servane about the internship:

I will be working with Robert Östling to compute an algorithm based on neural network to analyse videos in sign language to validate or invalidate the correlation between semantics and the area of the body where you sign. Robert and his colleagues already proved that there was a significant correlation for Swedish Sign Language, but they used manual methods to mark the areas on the body, whereas my work intends to mark them automatically using optical flow detection, this allowing us to expand the method on large amounts of videos in multiple Sign Languages.
