Etymologically related nouns in the Old Germanic languages often belong to different inflectional classes. This suggests that in some of the languages, the words have been transferred from one inflectional class to another. Why might it be that some words shift between declensions? In this talk, I will present some case studies of declension shifts in the Old Germanic languages and discuss some factors that appear to be responsible for these morphological innovations. Special attention will be given to the concept of a pivot and its role for declension shifts.
