This lecture addresses some current developments in the fields of word typology and the study of wordhood. It pleads for a non-reductionist and less aprioristic approach to the study of morphology, according to which the received notions of clitic, word, and affix are in need of significant refinement. It discusses the scalar nature of some of the phenomena involved in defining these notions and the pros and cons of a prototype-based approach to such issues.
