Musicians have become one of the most commonly used model populations in neuropsychological studies of expertise. Here I will , first, summarize main findings from the neurobiological literature on musicians, highlighting key question relating to the specificity, causal nature and functional implications of the observed associations between training and brain anatomy. Secondly, I will discuss recent work from our lab, where we use twin modelling to address basic questions concerning musical expertise from a behavior genetic perspective. Finally, I will summarize new findings on the specific neural effects of training musical improvisation.
