The field of magnetic resonance imaging is intrinsically interdisciplinary, involving neuroscience, psychology, psychiatry, radiology, physics, computer science and mathematics. For me, this is part of the pleasure in working in this area, providing an opportunity to collaborate with scientists and clinicians with a wide range of backgrounds. Mainly due to these collective efforts the brain MR imaging has been transformed to a special field – neuroimaging. The established interactions between different fields will be discussed.

My goal is to provide a guide to the principles of MRI with sufficient depth to make the material accessible to an investigator with no prior knowledge of the field. Short overview of MRI methods will be given with a focus on in brain imaging - structural MRI, diffusion and functional MRI, MR Spectroscopy. An overview of MRI technique and MRI scanner environment as well as opportunities and the possible limitations of MRI will be highlighted.
