A fresh article studies concept semantics by summarizing the content of movies in a factor model (PCA) and correlating with fMRI activations ('A Continuous Semantic Space Describes the Representation of Thousands of Object and Action Categories across the Human Brain' Huth et al 2012, http://tiny.cc/2uxzqw ). In contrast to some earlier studies that showed an activation blob for animals and a separate blob for tools, the present study shows graded overlapping widely distributed activations for the semantic factors, in line with most theoretical accounts of associative representations in concept semantics. This seminar will give an overview present knowledge of (concept and word-) semantic brain representation with emphasis on semantic space approaches and the article by Huth. I would like to discuss findings, strengths and limitations of using semantic space models in this context.
