Lamjung Yolmo is a dialect of Yolmo (also known as Helambu Sherpa) a Central Bodic language of the Tibeto-Burman family. Like closely related languages, Lamjung Yolmo has a range of epistemic and evidential meanings encoded on the verb. In this presentation I will look at how speakers use these different copulas while watching magic tricks. Magic is a useful medium for eliciting a variety of different utterances as it involves visual description, uncertainty and surprise. By looking at the reactions of a number of speakers to magic tricks I'll show how there is a great deal of inter-speaker variation in how the different copula functions are employed, and discuss what this means for an analysis of their meaning.
