The project aims to explore the potential of computer-assisted modeling of language change. A model of speaker interactions is implemented and computer simulations are run to test hypotheses about linguistic diffusion. The purpose of the simulations is to contribute to our understanding of how linguistic innovations spread in a speaker community. The approach builds on usage-based theories of language change and makes use of agent-based modeling. In the talk, a prototype of a simulation framework will be shown that runs inside a web browser, and some insights from these simulations will be presented. The talk will also (briefly) touch on some general points regarding opportunities and limitations of modeling and computer simulations for the study of language change.
