Summary:
The purpose of the present project is to refine and test a paradigm for estimating the robustness of individual speech sound categories in infants. Current paradigms for studying speech sound category development are based on the ability to discriminate between two different speech sound categories, and thus always include the relative robustness of the two categories as a potential confounding factor. Being able to estimate how stable a single speech sound category is at different stages of development would be useful both for basic research on infant language acquisition and relevant when evaluating the functional impact of treatment, such as cochlear implants and hearing aids, on early language development.
