The five sections of the Department of Linguistics are specialized in different aspects of the human language. In General Linguistics, the main focus is on language typology, linguistic diversity, areal linguistics and child language development. The Phonetics section specializes in early speech development, speech production and perception as well as speech and language impairments. The Sign Language section explores the various aspects of sign language grammar and is presently building a comprehensive digital corpus of the Swedish Sign Language. The section Swedish as a Second Language for the Deaf is pursuing studies of second language learning of the deaf. In Computational Linguistics, the present focus is on information retrieval and machine translation.
