Phonetics Lab History

Research in Phonetics at Stockholm University started in 1952, when two new departments with state-of-the-art laboratory equipment were established – the Phonetic Research Laboratory and the Phonetic Training Laboratory. In 1965, the Department of Linguistics was formed, with Professor Björn Lindblom as Head of the Section for Phonetics.

In the early 1970s, the Department of Linguistics moved to the newly built Campus at Frescati. The Section for Phonetics grew rapidly and produced groundbreaking research in speech physiology.

In its present location at Stockholm University, the Phonetics Lab was established in 1977. This relocation resulted in a custom-built Phonetics Lab with advanced technical equipment and an anechoic chamber.

In 1997, two electrically-shielded test booths and three sound-attenuated experimental rooms were installed in the Phonetics Lab as well as a waiting area for research participants.

In 2006–2009, a grant from The Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation enabled the purchase of an EEG-system, several Eye-tracking systems and a Wave-system. The Lab is continuously being upgraded to hold its state-of-the-art level. Throughout the years, the Phonetics Lab has closely collaborated with the Department of Speech, Music and Hearing at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Karolinska Institutet, and Karolinska University Hospital.

The Phonetics Lab is a valuable asset for all researchers at the Department of Linguistics, and it attracts researchers and students from all over the world. A more detailed description of the current equipment, facilities and research projects can be found on the Phonetics Lab webpages.
