In the field of Automated Essay Scoring (AES), one attempts to assign grades automatically to student essays using methods from natural language processing.

Robert Östling and Andre Smolentzov at the Department of Linguistics have developed an AES system based on a corpus of essays collected by Björn Tyrefors Hinnerich and Erik Höglin at the Department of Economics.

We have an on-line version of the system which you can play with. You can also download the source code and data below. It uses our part-of-speech tagger, Stagger, for text pre-processing.
