Multilingualism in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Section for Multilingualism in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is one of several sections within the Department of Linguistics at Stockholm University. We work in close cooperation with Sign Language section. Research on Multilingualism in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is conducted at Stockholm University since 1981, first at the Department of Scandinavian Languages and, since 2008, at the Department of Linguistics. We give courses in the subject to deaf, hard of hearing and hearing students.

Research

Since the start in the 1980’s research on Swedish as a second language for the deaf has mainly focused on describing similarities and differences between deaf and hearing second language learners. Much of the research has been conducted in close cooperation with the Swedish Special Schools for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
