Abstract

For several years we have employed multiple neuroimaging techniques to study the development and plasticity of brain mechanisms important for language processing.  I will discuss several lines of neuroimaging research on language from our lab:  studies of brain mechanisms for language in children, studies of manual (signed) vs. spoken language, and studies of children and adults who have had differences in language experience (e.g., socioeconomic status, age of second language acquisition).  I will conclude with a discussion of our evidence-based intervention for families from lower socioeconomic status backgrounds, with an emphasis on aspects of parent language usage that are targeted with specific strategies in the parent training component of the intervention.
