Atle Grønn, University of Oslo, Dept. of Literature, Area Studies and European Languages, talar under rubriken “Tense and aspect in counterfactual constructions (with data from parallel corpora on Germanic, Romance and Slavic)”.

Tid och plats

: 11 mars kl. 15-17 i C 307

The talk will have two parts. In the first part I will demonstrate the
use of various parallel corpora developed at the University of Oslo and try to show how these corpora can provide interesting contrastive data for Germanic, Romance and Slavic - here exemplified with counterfactual constructions.

In the second part of the talk I will present joint work with Arnim von Stechow. Our main focus is on the cross-linguistic use of (semantically empty) past tense morhpology in counterfactual conditionals (alongside semantic future and perfect operators). We argue that the mechanism of multiple agree is needed in order to get the temporal facts right at the syntax-semantics interface. We have tested our theory on 10 Indo-European languages.
