This talk reports on my ongoing work on polar interrogatives (yes/no-questions). Previous work on the typology of polar interrogatives has focused on the way interrogation is marked. In my work, I go beyond the marking of interrogation and look at the structural properties of polar interrogatives more holistically. Attention is paid to how polar interrogatives can differ from their declarative counterparts in the world's languages, and a typology is proposed along these lines. Following the principles of classification introduced in my earlier work on negation (Miestamo 2005), mutatis mutandis, interrogatives that do not differ structurally from declaratives except for the presence of interrogative markers are called symmetric interrogatives, and those that do show structural differences vis-à-vis their declarative counterparts are called asymmetric interrogatives. Different types of asymmetry between interrogatives and declaratives are observed and discussed in the talk, and their possible functional motivations are also addressed.
