Abstract

Place names are interesting and underexploited sources for linguistic and social data, from diachronic but also synchronic perspectives. But beware! Place names studies in all their aspects, historical linguistic as well social history are treacherous. Language in general, but place names especially are at the crossroads between the realm of pure lingusitics and the realm of human activity and nature. If anything, humans are unpredictable.

Using place names from Lebanon and the Middle East and North Africa, the presentation will take up 4 issues:

  1. Place names in their socio-linguistic context:
    - What is place and what is a name?
    - Significance and meaning, do names have meaning?
  2. Studying place names:
    - Data
    - Etymology
  3. Technical tools
    - Stengths
    - Weaknesses
  4. Some result
    - Linguistic
    - Social

Elie Wardini is professor of Arabic and Semitic languages at the Department of Asian, Middle Eastern and Turkish Studies at Stoclholm University. He has written on Lebanese place names and on Neologisms in Modern Literary Syriac.
