Abstract
Since its birth in the early nineties, the Python programming language has seen wide adoption in both the academia and in the industry. In this talk we are going to present short Python recipes for solving common problems in processing spoken, signed and written languages. In particular, we are going to address questions related to:

- Data crunching
- Typological databases and parallel texts
- Working with common annotation formats
- Basic signal processing tasks
- Plotting (including maps)

We are also hoping to make a case for and start a discussion about the place of free software tools in (publicly-funded) research.
