Abstract
China Institute of Forensic Science (CIFS) is the biggest and most important crime investigation laboratory in China. As a part of it, its Division of Forensic Phonetics deals with over 150 criminal cases related to voice every year, covering most cases of this kind in China. My talk will focus on two aspects. Firstly, I will make a general introduction to the work of my division, including our main job responsibilities, procedures and specifications, the structure of these criminal cases. Some real cases will be given. The second aspect is on the development of forensic phonetics, especially in speaker identification, in China's police department, what will be our next step and how will we do it.

Kang Jintao is Assistant Research Scientist of Forensic Phonetics at Institute of Forensic Science, Ministry of Public Security of China, specializing in solving voice-related criminal cases.  Since 2011, he has dealt with more than 150 criminal cases of various kinds, based on which he and his colleagues have developed practical specifications in speaker identification. He has co-written a book, Spectrograms for Speaker Identification in Standard Chinese (Qunzhong Press), and published several articles on forensic speaker identification.
