Abstract

Do Arab signers use Arab signed languages? Are illiterate deaf signers living in predominantly Arabophone regions still considered Arab? (How can we effectively define literacy in a polyglossic situation like that in the “Arab” world?) In this talk, I discuss several advantages and shortcomings of the designation “Arab Sign Languages” as a language family. Although lexicostatistical methods have previously been applied in an attempt to classify signed languages in the region, recent lexical and grammatical data from my ongoing fieldwork in Morocco and Egypt complicates this grouping. I also examine the impact of Pan-Arab language ideologies on signed languages and signing communities in the Arab world, in terms of specific linguistic structures such as fingerspelling systems and the spatial expression of time, as well as language policy and planning more broadly.
