Eye tracking-Lab

Two eye-tracking devices are currently available in the Phonetics Lab. They are placed in sound-proof studios with adjacent control rooms. A Tobii T120 17” screen and a surround sound system is used for stimuli presentation.

Our eye tracking systems provide good temporal and spatial resolution of eye gaze, without restriction of head movements or attachment of hardware to the subject’s head, a particularly important feature when working with infants.

In linguistics, eye tracking can be used to investigate for example reading, lip reading and turn taking in conversations. The eye tracking systems in the Phonetics Lab are extensively used to investigate infant’s reactions to spoken language, audio-visual integration, scene exploration strategies and reading behaviour.

The technology is very useful for infant studies, as infants can respond with their looking behaviour long before they are able to respond verbally. The two eye-tracking devices can also be used for live interaction studies where children or adult subjects communicate with each other.

Eye tracking data can easily be combined with other measurements available at the Lab, like EEG, EMG, articulatory movements (WAVE) as well as with live recordings. Programs and experiments in which the eye movements control the procedure or apparatus can also be developed in the Eye Tracking Lab.
