Incoming students

If you are interested in studying at the Department of Linguistics as part of an exchange program, please contact the Exchange Coordinator or the International Office at your home university to apply.

If you are selected for exchange studies by the Exchange Coordinator/ International Office you also need to fulfil the requirements of the courses you wish to attend. Due to the fact that courses at the department are generally only taught in Swedish, we usually require that you know enough Swedish to follow classes. Further, to be eligible for any higher level courses, you need to fulfil the specific entrance qualifications that apply for these courses.

In order for us to make a decision regarding your eligibility you need to provide the following documents:

  • A transcript of records for any relevant courses attended - courses in general linguistics and/or phonetics at university level
  • A description of the contents of these courses

Once you have been accepted to courses, you will receive a Letter of Acceptance by e-mail from the Department of Linguistics.
There are several forms to be filled in, to be enrolled at the Department of Linguistics at Stockholm University.

  • Registration form. The form is mandatory and must be filled in electronically and returned as soon as possible by e-mail to the Exchange Coordinator at the Department of Linguistics. It is on this form that you indicate whether or not you want student housing. We recommend that you apply for student housing, since it is very hard to find accommodation in Stockholm.
  • On-line application form for Swedish language courses. Swedish language courses (beginners level to advanced level) are offered free of charge for exchange students. Application is done through an on-line application form (see link below). Check with your Coordinator whether you can receive credits for Swedish language courses on return home.

The deadline to return the Registration Form and the Application form for Swedish Language Courses is around May 15 for the autumn semester or full academic year, and around October 15 for the spring semester. This means that the host department must receive information about selected students, their choice of courses and their records of previous courses attended some weeks in advance of this deadline to be able to make a decision regarding their eligibility in due time to the registration deadline.

Enrolment at Stockholm University is compulsory for all students. Enrolment for exchange students takes place during the Orientation Week (the week before the start of or the first week of the academic semester. Bring your letter of acceptance, a valid ID-card or passport and money in cash to the enrolment. After that you get enrolled at the Department of Linguistics (and any other department you will be taking courses at). As a student at Stockholm University, you may also join the student union. As a member, you get access to a number of various benefits and discounts. You can find more information regarding the student union here.

Make sure that you have a good insurance coverage for your stay in Sweden. Without this, medical treatment may be very expensive. Consult your insurance company to see if you need to increase your insurance premium for full coverage while living abroad. As an EU citizen, you should also bring the social insurance form E128, which you can obtain from your Social Insurance Office. This form entitles you to public medical service on the same basis as Swedish citizens.
Students from the EU and the Nordic countries do not need a visa and Nordic citizens do not need a residence permit either. EU citizens staying in the country for more than 3 months need to apply for a residence permit once in Sweden. You can obtain an application, as well as detailed information on how to apply from the Swedish Migration Board. If you are of non-EU/Nordic nationality, consult a Swedish Embassy for rules on visas and residence permits or contact the Swedish Migration Board before you set off to study in Sweden.

The autumn semester starts in the end of August and ends in the end of January. The spring semester begins in the end of January and ends in the beginning of June.
