About us

The Department of Linguistics has approximately 70 employees, making it one of the largest departments in the language section of the Faculty of Humanities. The activities at the department consist of 30 % education and 70 % research. The research is mostly externally financed.

Five sections
The department encompasses five sections, each with its own field of study: General Linguistics, Phonetics, Computational Linguistics, Swedish Sign Language and Swedish as a Second Language for the Deaf. The five sections have their own responsibility for their share of the department’s education and research.

Research
Research is conducted with different specializations in each section. Linguistics is one of the leading research areas at Stockholm University.

Education
The first semester of the education in General Linguistics, Phonetics, and Computational Linguistics is given jointly. From the second semester you select your specialization in any of the three subjects.

There is also a bachelor’s programme with specialization in General Linguistics, Phonetics or Computational Linguistics, and one in Sign Language. The Department also offers courses at the second level.

The third level education is given in the subject linguistics with specialization in one of the five research areas the department has.

In addition, the department offers advanced courses (second level) in reading and writing difficulties / dyslexia, speech training as well as courses in Speech and Language Pathology, the latter in collaboration with Karolinska institutet.
