WELCOME TO THE SECTION FOR
 GENERAL LINGUISTICS
The term "General Linguistics" is used here as a translation of the Swedish allmän språkvetenskap. Our subject can be broadly defined as the study of structure of human languages and how they are acquired and used by individuals and groups.
    Even if the research activities within our group are quite diversified, we have a distinct research profile. Many of our researchers have their own web pages – links can be found on the People page. If you are interested in our Ph.D. program, please consult the information here.
The picture above belongs to the art collection of Stockholm University and was painted by Hendrick van Cleve (approx. 1525 - 1589). It shows the Tower of Babel, a suitable symbol for the diversity of human languges, and is one of many with a similar motif, the most famous of which were painted by Pieter Breughel the Elder.
